On February 14, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) issued the notification for the UPSC CSE 2024. Aspiring candidates interested in taking the Civil Services Examination can find details regarding the UPSC Prelims exam pattern, syllabus, marking scheme, and additional information here.
Plan of Examination
The Civil Services Exam has two main parts:
1.Preliminary Exam: It is an objective type exam, to pick candidates for the next stage.
2. Main Exam: It includes written tests and interviews, to select candidates for different posts.
Prelims Examination Scheme

  • The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination comprises two papers with multiple-choice questions, totaling a maximum of 400 marks.
  • This exam is primarily a screening test; the marks obtained here won’t be used to determine the final ranking of candidates.
  • Approximately twelve to thirteen times the total vacancies available will be selected for the Civil Services (Main) Examination from those who qualify the Preliminary Exam.
  • Only candidates declared qualified by the Commission in the Preliminary Examination will be eligible for the Main Examination, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
  • Candidates must achieve a minimum of 33% marks in General Studies Paper-II and a total qualifying score in General Studies Paper-I as determined by the Commission to qualify for the Main Examination.

Marking Scheme
(i) Each question comprises of four possible answers. If a candidate chooses the wrong answer, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
(ii) If a candidate selects more than one answer, even if one of them is correct, it will be considered a wrong answer. The same penalty as mentioned above will apply to that question.
(iii) If a candidate leaves a question unanswered, meaning no answer is provided, there will be no penalty for that question.
Prelims Exam Pattern

The exam consists of two mandatory papers, each carrying 200 marks.
(1) Both papers will be multiple-choice type, with each lasting two hours.
(2) The General Studies Paper-II is a qualifying paper in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, with a minimum passing mark set at 33%.
(3) The question papers will be available in both Hindi and English languages.
Prelims Syllabus
Paper I – (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
– Current events of national and international importance.
– History of India and Indian National Movement.
– Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
– Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
– Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
– General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require
subject specialization.
– General Science.

Paper II-(200 marks) Duration : Two hours
– Comprehension.
– Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
– Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
– Decision making and problem solving.
– General mental ability.
– Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level).
