NEET MDS 2024: Are there sufficient exam centres in North East India?

Of late, NEET MDS exam 2024, scheduled for March 2018, is making it to the headlines for all the wrong reasons. One of them is the lack of sufficient exam centres in North East India.
According to media reports, several students registered to appear for the post-graduate entrance examination will have to travel long distances to appear for the exam.
Reports claimed that there are no allotted centres for students in the Northeastern states, and a few union territories.
Responding to these news reports, about the lack of examination centres for these states, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) clarified that in fact there are multiple centres in the eastern states, listing the various centres spread across the region.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the MoHFW official handle tweeted, “With reference to some media reports suggesting there are no exam centres in the North East, it is clarified that there are NEET MDS examination centres in north-eastern states. There are exam centres in Shillong, Naharlagun, Kohima, Aizawl, Guwahati and Kolkata”

Further, in a PIB Press release, the Ministry clarified that according to certain media reports, no examination centres for the National Entrance Cum Eligibility Test (NEET) – Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) have been assigned to the Northeastern states. However, these reports are not accurate. In fact, examination centres exist in the northeastern states. Centres can be found in Shillong, Naharlagun, Kohima, Aizawl, Guwahati, and Kolkata. Furthermore, during the second application window for the NEET-MDS 2024 exam, which ended on March 11, 2024, only 560 candidates registered.
Supreme court hearing tomorrow amid calls for NEET MDS 2024 postponement
The Supreme Court has scheduled the NEET MDS 2024 postponement hearing for tomorrow, March 15, 2024. Previously, the apex court stated that it would not make a decision on the exam postponement and instead directed the central government to step in. Despite this, the date of the NEET MDS 2024 exam remains unchanged.
Earlier, TOI had reported that a group of aspirants had petitioned the Supreme Court to postpone the NEET MDS 2024 exam until July. In response, during the court hearing, the Supreme Court directed the Centre to promptly address the NEET MDS 2024 exam issue. However, despite the court’s directive, the Centre did not make a decision for nearly two weeks.
However, on March 8, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) decided to extend the internship completion deadline until June 30. This decision was influenced by requests from students whose internship deadlines had been extended past the previous deadline of March 31. As a result, the NEET MDS registration window will be reopened for candidates who complete their internships between April 1 and June 30.
Despite petitions and requests for postponement, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) has maintained its position and will not delay the NEET MDS exam in 2024. The exam will still take place on March 18, 2024, as originally scheduled.
Tomorrow, the Supreme Court will rule on the postponement of the NEET MDS 2024 exam. It is important to note that the exam admit cards are also scheduled to be released tomorrow, March 15 leaving only a few days until the exam date.
