The Apple AirPods have been a bonafide success story by any standards. Not only the true wireless earphones have made Apple billions of dollars but ended up creating a category that has showed no signs of slowing down. However, a report by Counterpoint Research suggests that the AirPods are seeing a dip in sales.
According to Counterpoint, Apple lost considerable share in both sales volume and value. As per Liz Lee, senior analyst Counterpoint, Apple is unlikely to be too worried despite AirPods seeing price drops.
Like Apple, Lee from Counterpoint is also expected the next generation AirPods to become a “massive hit”. “It’s been so long since we’ve seen a new release, and if you factor in some attractive pricing, it’s very possible the AirPods 3 could push overall sales for Apple TWS hearables past 80m for the year.”
Apple’s market share has declined considerably in the true wireless space, as per Counterpoint. In the same quarter last year, Apple had more than 35% market share and now it is down to less than 25%. It’s a significant drop but still keeps Apple as the market leader but others like Samsung, Xiaomi have seen their market share gone up — somewhat at the expense of Apple.
Just for perspective, in 2020, Apple was expected to cross 100 million of AirPods sales. The AirPods last saw a refresh in 2019 when Apple launched the AirPods Pro.
AirPods 3: What we know so far
Rumours are rife about Apple launching AirPods 3 this month at the September event where it is expected to unveil the new generation iPhones. While it’s rare for Apple to launch any other product — except Watch and iPad — at the September event except the iPhone but a lot of tipsters are confident about AirPods 3 arriving.
The AirPods 3 will not have active noise cancellation but are expected to see a design overhaul. They are expected to look like the current generation AirPods Pro — the stem will be shortened. A new chip is also expected to be inside the AirPods 3. The AirPods 3 are slated to replace the current AirPods which haven’t been upgraded in more than two years now.
A brand new pair of AirPods are expected to give a fresh impetus to what have been the world’s most popular true wireless earbuds.
