Vijay Rupani: Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani resigns | India News

NEW DELHI: In an unexpected political development, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday submitted his resignation to governor Acharya Devvrat at Raj Bhavan.
The resignation comes a year ahead of assembly elections in the state.
After submitting his resignation, Rupani told reporters he is thankful to the BJP leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve as the chief minister.
“During my tenure, I got the opportunity to work for the development of the state under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership,” Rupani said.
He parried questions about the reasons behind the sudden move, saying he served as the CM for five years which is a long time.
Rupani added that change of guard is a natural phenomena in the BJP.
He said he will continue to work under the leadership of the BJP national president.
“The people have repeatedly reposed their faith in the BJP during the past five years,” he said.

On who will be the next chief minister, Rupani said that the party will decide about it.
He denied that he had any differences with state BJP president C R Paatil.
Rupani comes from the Jain community which has around two per cent population in the state.
There is speculation that his successor may be from the Patidar community.

He first became the chief minister on August 7, 2016, following the resignation of incumbent Anandiben Patel, and continued in the office after the BJP’s victory in the 2017 assembly elections.
Rupani, who completed five years in office on August 7 this year, was present at the inauguration on Saturday of Sardardham Bhavan where Modi was present virtually.
Rupani is the third BJP CM to step down in recent months.
Earlier, BS Yediyurappa and Tirath Singh Rawat stepped down as chief ministers of Karnataka and Uttarakhand respectively.
In Assam too, following the assembly election results, the BJP had replaced incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal with Himanta Biswa Sarma.
