A strong monsoon this year has increased the area under cultivation of pulses. According to the latest data from the Department of Agriculture, in the pulses basket, sowing of urad and moong continued during the week ended September 6, while planting of all other kharif pulses such as tur has ended.

Sowing is mostly over for all crops, barring a few pulses and coarse cereals which continue late.

Overall, Kharif crops have so far been planted in 109.23 million hectares of land which is higher than the 106.92 million hectares under cultivation during the same period last year.

While the sowing is over for almost all crops, the relentless rain in some parts of India will determine the final yield if it continues over the next few weeks. Floods have already damaged standing crops in parts of southern and western India. The exact extent of damage will be known after the proper assessment.
