Sports is beautiful but the players who make them look so, go through a lot of hardships. These hardships are used as strong and powerful anecdotes in the future to inspire generations of budding superstars. Mohammed Siraj’s story will also be used as a template now.

On Friday, the pacer lost his 53-year-old father, who was suffering from a lung ailment. Siraj has got a India call-up after a long period and is in Australia currently, fancying his chance to repesent India after almost 2 years. Once the sad news was revealed to him he was “shocked” and shattered. The pain was even more agonising because the 26-year-old could not participate in the last rites of his beloved father. The quarantine rules placed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which continues to run havoc, even a year after the first positive case was found, denied Siraj the chance to see his father for one last time.

“My dad’s wish was always this – mera beta, desh ka naam roshan karna (my son, you should make my country proud). And, I will do that for sure,” an emotional Siraj told Sportstar on Friday.

“I know what kind of hardship my dad faced in my early days driving an auto rickshaw to let me pursue my passion for the game. It is shocking. I lost the biggest support of my life. It was his dream to see me play for the country and I am glad that way I could realise that and bring joy for him.”

“The coach Shastri Sir and captain Virat Kohli were informed about the news. They just told me to be bold and are lending all the support,” Siraj added.

Now, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has lauded the “tremendous character” of the Hyderabad-born. Ganguly has also wished success for him during the Australia series.
