NEW DELHI: Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering (DAASE), IIT Indore to B.Tech programme in Space Science and Engineering for the academic year 2023-24.
Around 20 students will get admission to this course through the JEE-Advanced entrance examination. The selected students of this programme can specialise in one of the following domains with curated elective courses and a semester-long research project — Space Instrumentation – Detectors & Payloads, Imaging & Data Analytics, Remote Sensing & Atmospheric Engineering, Astronomy & Astrophysics.
“During their 4-year learning tenure, the students will be exposed to cutting-edge research and tech development in the sectors of payloads, small satellites and detector design; data analytics; imaging; high-end numerical simulations; with applications targeted towards climate change, sustainable development, ecology, earth observations, agriculture, defence, communication, navigation and astronomy,” said a notice shared on the microblogging site Twitter.
This new programme is designed to train students in the field of communication, navigation, defence, security, survey, agriculture, environment, ecology, and astronomy.
The programme has a capacity of 20 students per batch and admission is strictly based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced scores. JEE Advanced is one of the toughest engineering entrance exams in India and tests the aptitude and knowledge of the candidates in various fields of engineering.
The B.Tech programme in Space Science and Engineering is a four-year programme that aims to impart knowledge and skills in various areas of space science and technology such as space systems engineering, satellite technology, space physics, space biology, and astrophysics. The programme will also cover core subjects of engineering such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science.
The programme will be taught by experienced faculty members who have expertise in space science and technology. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of space science and engineering. The programme will also include laboratory work, projects, and internships to provide hands-on experience to the students.
With the launch of this programme, IIT Indore has become the first IIT to offer a B.Tech programme in Space Science and Engineering. This programme is expected to attract students who have a passion for space science and technology and want to pursue a career in this field.
The Indian space programme has made significant progress in recent years and has emerged as a major player in the global space industry. With the launch of this programme, IIT Indore aims to contribute to the growth of the Indian space programme by producing skilled professionals who can work in various domains of space science and technology.
Overall, the launch of the B.Tech programme in Space Science and Engineering by IIT Indore is a significant step towards promoting space science and technology education in India. This programme is expected to provide a platform for students to pursue their passion for space science and technology and contribute to the growth of the Indian space programme.
