By Kingshuk Kusari: India batter Virat Kohli reached his 28th century in Test cricket on Sunday, 12 March. Kohli reached the three-figure mark against Australia in the fourth and final Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Kohli’s century was his first in the Test format since November 2019, ending the three-year drought in the format. The right-hander played out a patient innings on Day 4 of the Test match in a slow Ahmedabad pitch, which was a goldmine for the batters. Kohli’s innings helped India pull level against Australia’s huge first innings total where they scored 480 runs.

The former Indian captain had gone through an extended lean patch in world cricket. The batter returned to form against Afghanistan in the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup and revived his white-ball career. However, Kohli could not transfer that form into Test cricket and remained without a century in the Bangladesh Test series.

23 Matches

Virat Kohli had gone without a century in Test cricket for 23 matches. Since scoring a Pink Ball Test hundred against Bangladesh in November 2019, Kohli had a lean patch of form.

40 Innings

This was Kohli’s first hundred in 40 innings. The batter had come eerily close to a century against South Africa in early 2022, but got out on 79 runs. Kohli had scored just six half-centuries in that period.

1st vs AUS since December 2018

Virat Kohli’s last century against Australia came in the historic series of 2018/19 where India lifted their first Test series trophy Down Under. Kohli scored 123 runs in the second Test match of the series, making a strong start to his series. The then Indian captain would score 82 runs in the third Test match, his only two 50+ scores in that tour.

1st vs AUS at home since February 2013

This was also Virat Kohli’s first century against Australia at home in a decade. The Indian batter hit 107 run in the first Test match against Australia at Chennai in that series. India only batted once in that Test match with Kohli and MS Dhoni combining to put up a huge total. While Kohli scored a century, MS Dhoni hit his career-best 224 runs.

Test hundred after 1204 days

It has indeed been an agonising time for Kohli, who went through major ups and down between his Test centuries. Kohli came out about his mental health issues, and confessed that he was faking intensity in and out of he pitch. One of the most successful Indian captains left the mantle for his deputy Rohit Sharma, took prolonged rests from international cricket amid heavy criticism and then returned with a bang in 2022. Since his century against Afghanistan, Kohli scored 4 Hundreds, 3 in the ODIs and now his first in the Test format of the game.

This was also Kohli’s 75th international century.

At the time of writing India were 419/5 in 145 overs, and trailed Australia by 61 runs in the final Test match.
