By India Today Sports Desk: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has said that the team wants to play more Test cricket after securing a series clean sweep over West Indies on Saturday.
Bavuma had played a starring role in the win after scoring a brilliant 172 in the second innings to set up a big target for the West Indies. The visitors crumbled in the chase as the Proteas bowlers ran through them and ultimately got them all out for just 106 runs. This meant that South Africa won the series 2-0 and the match at Johannesburg by 284 runs.
Speaking after the match, as quoted by Cricinfo, Bavuma said he was very satisfied and was glad to have converted his innings into a big score.
“Good to see that the people came out on Saturday to witness us taking the trophy. Very satisfied. I’ve come in when the team needs to rebuild, I am glad I was able to convert. Hopefully, more of those to come, not us being 10 for 2, but me converting. Happy to contribute to our cause,” said Bavuma.
The Proteas skipper was asked about playing two spinners in the match and he said he was hoping that the conditions at the Wanderers was going to be suiting both Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. He said the duo played their role.
“I think from the time we made the decision about the composition of the team, coming here to the Wanderers, we were hoping the conditions would end up playing this way and fortunately we got it right. The guys played their role. Simon, Kesh they played really well,” said Bavuma.
Despite the big series win, South Africa cricket fans will have to wait till December to see their Test team don the whites again. Bavuma said that it was a big conversation and he had made his part clear.
The Proteas skipper feels that they have built a team that gives the fans something to be proud of and they want to play as much Test cricket as possible.
It’s a big conversation, I think I’ve said my part and other people have waxed lyrical about it. We have built a team that gives the fans something to be proud of but unfortunately we will only be donning Test whites in December. We want to play as much Test cricket as possible.”
