By India Today Sports Desk: Australia fast bowler Jhye Richardson will miss the upcoming IPL 2023 and could be out of contention for the Ashes as he underwent surgery to get rid of his hamstring problem.
The 26-year-old Richardson suffered a recurrence of the injury while playing club cricket last week following his pulling up during the Big Bash League (BBL). The Australian was earlier ruled out of the ODI series against India.
“Injuries are a big part of cricket, thats a fact. Frustrating? Absolutely,” Richardson tweeted. “But I’m now in a scenario where I can get back to doing what I love and work bloody hard to become an even better player than before. One step back, two steps forward. Let’s do this.”
Richardson was due to join Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023 following his stint with Punjab Kings. The Australia fast bowler previously underwent shoulder surgery in 2019, which forced him to miss the ODI World Cup and the Ashes that year.
“Obviously it’s devastating that he has re-injured that hamstring again and he is going to miss a significant amount of time to get his hamstring right,” Western Australia coach Adam Voges said.
“We all feel for Jhye and we’re hopeful that whatever they come with as a solution can fix his hamstring and we get him back out there because it has been a tough 12 months for him.”
Richardson took his maiden Test five-wicket haul against England in December 2021, his first since returning after a shoulder surgery. However, a nagging heel injury ruled him out of the the following match and has not played Test cricket since then. The Australia bowler played in the T20I and ODI series during the tour of Sri Lanka in 2022.
