By India Today Sports Desk: Parthiv Patel said that the Royal Challengers Bangalore fans would be hoping that captain Smriti Mandhana can start the WPL campaign in the same way as Harmanpreet Kaur did for Mumbai Indians.
The MI skipper set the stage on fire on the opening day as she scored a 30-ball 65 to help her team thrash the Gujarat Giants by a whopping margin of 143 runs.
Mandhana was the costliest signing in the WPL auction and the RCB franchise has pinned a lot of hope in her while giving her the captaincy. Speaking on Jio Cinema, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Patel said that the RCB fans will want their skipper to start the campaign the same way as Harmanpreet.
“Where you have Smriti Mandhana – opening batter, left-hander – you will have to support RCB. There is no other choice. They will want Smriti Mandhana to start the same way as Harmanpreet Kaur,” said Patel.
The former cricketer also said that the RCB fans will want their legacy to be continued in the WPL and we would see the play-bold approach from the side in the competition.
“When we talk about big-ticket players, franchise cricket is different from international cricket, but the RCB fans will want their legacy to be maintained. Their play-bold approach and flair will not change, you will hundred percent get to see that from RCB,” said Patel.
Ahead of the match against Delhi Capitals, Mandhana was asked about her being compared to Virat Kohli, who is a legend at RCB. The Indian women’s team opener said that she is hoping to reach the level set by Kohli as she is nowhere near that level at the moment.
“I don’t like the kind of comparison because what he (Kohli) has achieved is amazing. I just hope that I reach that level, but I’m nowhere near. What he has achieved for this franchise (RCB), I would like to try and do that,” Mandhana told reporters in Mumbai.
