To raise awareness about the brain and its diseases, the World Brain Foundation celebrates World Brain Day on July 22 every year. Brain Awareness Week is observed across the world, along with brain awareness campaigns which are held in major cities in India as well.
The human brain is a wonderful creation of nature. Weighing only one and a half kilograms, this organ is a complex structure containing about 100 billion nerves. If the nerves in it are strung long enough, the entire earth can be circled four times. If there is an injury to the nervous system, the surrounding tissues can grow and do the work of the injured nervous system, but new nerves cannot be born. So brain care and preservation is very important.
The theme of this year’s World Brain Day is Brain Health for All. This is a message that conveys the importance of the brain, functional activities and conservation to all.
This year’s World Brain Day campaign consists of 5 key messages:
Create awareness about brain and brain diseases. Give special lectures on brain to children in schools and colleges, providing information about diseases by showing replicas of brain in museum model, treatment facilities. Encourage school children to know more about the brain through drawing competition, debate competition.
Serious diseases like stroke, brain infection, epilepsy etc. can be controlled by proper preventive measures. Around 80 to 90 percent of stroke cases can be prevented by controlling its underlying causes like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, obesity, smoking etc. Diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s can be controlled from progression by adopting a good lifestyle, including healthy eating habits for brain.
It is very important that the scientific study of brain diseases, new discoveries and treatments are accessible to the masses at an affordable cost. For that, in all parts of the world, medical community associations, groups of people who have recovered from the disease should put pressure on the local government and formulate people-friendly plans. These schemes should be continuously monitored and made available to the eligible beneficiaries.
Education for all is still on paper in many parts of the world and all governments and non-governmental organizations of the world must join hands to overcome this socio-educational inequality.

This year’s World Brain Awareness Campaign has been organized keeping in mind the above five points. By giving incentives to doctors, patient self-help groups and organizations who run the best campaigns, they are encouraged to inform the public even more.

Your lifestyle plays an important part in controlling brain diseases.
* Problems such as blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes and high cholesterol should be kept in check.
* Smoking and alcohol should be avoided.
* Eat more nutritious foods, avoid fried/greasy, sugary foods.
* Increase your consumption of vegetables and sprouted pulses.
* Practice at least 30 to 45 minutes brisk walking, jogging, exercise, yoga or meditation every day to maintain physical health.
