Thousands have gathered in Chicago for the Democratic Convention to show their support for Kamala Harris as officially nominated democratic party candidate against Republican rival Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential elections.
The convention will also mark the official nomination of Harris’ running mate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
US President Joe Biden, who quit the US presidential race last month, will also make his farewell speech at the convention.
Former US presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are also likely to speak at the event.

In her concluding remarks at the convention, Hillary Clinton said, We are not just electing a president but uplifting our nation. For the next 78 days we need to work harder than we ever have. We need to beat back the dangers that (Donald) Trump and his allies pose to the rule of law and our way of life.”
“Don’t get distracted or complacent, talk to your friends and neighbours. Volunteer be proud champions of the country that we all love,” she said.
Clinton also said that she wants her grandchildren and their grandchildren to know that “she was here in this moment and that we were here”.
“That we were with Kamala Harris every step of the way,” she said.
“This is our time America. This is when we step up. This is when we break through. The future is here. Its in our grasp. Let’s go win it,” Clinton said.
Hillary Clinton Slams Donald Trump
Hillary Clinton has slammed Donald Trump, saying that the Republican presidential candidate “only thinks about himself”. She also attacked him for mocking Kamala Harris.

Hillary Clinton is now speaking at the Democratic event. Praising Joe Biden, she said that he has been the “champion of Democracy, at home and abroad.”
“He brought dignity back to the White House and showed what it means to be a true patriot,” she added.
Hillary Clinton, who became the first woman to secure a major US party’s presidential nomination, also thanked Biden for his “lifetime of service and leadership”.

US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now speaking at the Democratic Convention.
“I see a leader in Kamala Harris,” the New York Representative said.

Protesters against Israel’s war in Gaza briefly breached the outer security fence of the Democratic convention in Chicago. A small group of around 100 demonstrators reportedly broke off from a larger march involving thousands of people and targeted the metal barriers surrounding the United Center on the first day of the party gathering.

Speaking at the convention, Kamala Harris thanked Joe Biden for his “historic leadership” and said “we are forever grateful to you”.
“I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president, Joe Biden,” Harris said to cheers.
“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation,” she added.

Dozens of protesters broke through part of the perimeter security fence surrounding the Democratic National Convention on Monday, drawing riot police to the site, a Reuters Television witness said. “Law enforcement personnel are currently on-scene and more information will be provided when available,” said a Chicago city spokesperson.

Over 200 content creators will be covering the Democratic National Convention alongside traditional media reporters, reports CNN. They have been credentialed for the Chicago event and will have reserved platform space on the convention floor, the report said. The content creators include top TikTok influencers and activists.
