Apple Too: What is ‘Apple Too’ and what ‘secrets’ is it revealing about working at Apple

Getting a job at Apple– one of the most advanced and biggest consumer technology companies– is a big deal in itself. Given the brand name, Apple is mostly expected to have a perfect work environment with leaders to look up to. But surprisingly, working at Apple may be quite different than what you had dreamed of.
What is Apple Too
A group of Apple employees are reviving ‘Me too’ to share their stories of workplace horror at Apple under the banner #AppleToo. While the ‘#MeToo’ movement mostly highlights the sexual assault at workplace, ‘Apple Too’ covers a range of issues like racism, sexism, inequity, discrimination, intimidation, suppression, coercion, abuse, unfair punishment, and unchecked privilege that is allegedly a cause of concern while working at Apple.
The movement is organised by Apple security engineer Cher Scarlett. She is trying to collect all stories of unfair treatment and abuse at one place and within a week the movement has received over 500 reports from employees across Apple. While the reports talk about different workplace issues, there’s one thing in common– the ignorance meted out by the human resource department.
The Medium blog post by Scarlett have started revealing the first batch of reports in which five employees talk about abuse of power, sexual assault, harassment, sexism and racism.
The reason for starting this movement as explained by Scarlett, “When we press for accountability and redress to the persistent injustices we witness or experience in our workplace, we are faced with a pattern of isolation, degradation, and gaslighting.”
The Apple Too movement is said to be the last resort for employees to reveal the real picture of working at Apple and they are hopeful that this would change things for the better one day. “We’ve exhausted all internal avenues. We’ve talked with our leadership. We’ve gone to the People team. We’ve escalated through Business Conduct. Nothing has changed. It’s time to Think Different,” she added.
